College football eras as Taylor Swift songs (2023)

College football is messy. It is perhaps the messiest, most drama-filled of all American major sports. At times, the drama inside college football feels more fit to be discussed on E! than on ESPN.

The messiness has only heightened in this NIL-transfer portal-realignment era. Speaking of eras! The lyrics of Taylor Swift, currently on her Ticketmaster-breaking Eras Tour, apply fittingly to many of the messiest situations in college football.

Swift’s songs encompass the feelings of many fans: bitterness over breakups, the jilted lover, the longing for what could have been, the bad blood, all of it. Here at The Athletic, we’ve combed through Swift’s discography to find the best points of comparison.

Name of the song: “Anti-Hero”
College football comparison: LSU coach Brian Kelly
Pertinent lyrics:
Sometimes, I feel like everybody is a sexy baby
And I’m a monster on the hill
Too big to hang out, slowly lurching toward your favorite city
Pierced through the heart, but never killed

What did Kelly do wrong? Every year coaches leave for greener, richer pastures. But when Kelly left Notre Dame for LSU, he was the villain, nay an anti-hero.

Maybe it’s because there’s just something about Kelly that doesn’t engender affection. Kelly is defined as a “program builder,” which is the most boring way you can describe a college football coach in a sea of play-calling geniuses, master recruiters and motivational maestros. With Kelly’s teams, efficiency is more the program’s ethic than excitement.

The biggest complaint lodged against Swift is she seems calculated. Inauthentic. As she sings in Anti-Hero, “I wake up screaming from dreaming, one day, I’ll watch as you’re leaving, ’cause you got tired of my scheming.” But do haters of Swift think their favorite artists don’t calculate, or at least somewhat plan, their rise to the top?

Kelly, like Swift, must be confused by this conundrum. Sure, Kelly didn’t do himself any favors by applying a faux-southern accent while talking to LSU fans at a basketball game. But Kelly and Swift deliver exactly what they are meant to deliver. Wins for Kelly. Hits for Swift.

(Video) You Belong With Me (Senior Night Version)

Name of song: “Lover”
College football comparison: USC coach Lincoln Riley and quarterback Caleb Williams
Pertinent lyrics:
Can I go where you go?
Can we always be this close?
Forever and ever, ah
Take me out and take me home
You’re my, my, my, my lover

The package deal. Riley announces he’s heading west to leave Oklahoma for USC. Williams follows (predictably) a few months later. The two are a perfect combination. Riley, the offensive mastermind who has turned former walk-ons and backups into Heisman winners, with Williams, who has been compared to a refined Patrick Mahomes.

As our Antonio Morales reported, Riley trusts Williams as much as any quarterback he’s ever coached. “Lover” is perhaps Swift’s most hopeful song about a relationship. It’s waltz, dream-like expression of love between two people even extends to how Williams plays quarterback. No rigidity. All rhythm. The purest expression of a playmaker.

In their first year together for the Trojans, Williams and Riley brought a depleted USC roster to the brink of the College Football Playoff and Williams took home the Heisman. Will the two build off last season and take things to the next level? Or will things fall apart, like the relationships portrayed in so many Swift songs?

Name of the song: “Bad Blood”
College football comparison: Jimbo Fisher and Nick Saban
Pertinent lyrics:
‘Cause baby, now we’ve got bad blood
You know it used to be mad love
So take a look what you’ve done

Admit it. It is fun when two older, proud, ego-driven millionaire men get petty. There’s something exciting when the normally stoic head ball coaches drop their bland coach speak for gossipy asides and venom-dipped insults. That enjoyment is heightened if there are the same dynamics at play as there were in the Jimbo Fisher-Nick Saban feud.

Last May, Saban claimed his former offensive coordinator was buying his players. Fisher called the accusations despicable and then implored reporters to dig into Saban’s past recruiting efforts.

Fittingly, the origin of “Bad Blood” is also about recruiting. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Swift said the song is about how a friend “basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me.” Which in other terms, is recruiting!

Name of the song: “Look What You Made Me Do”
College football comparison: Jim Harbaugh and Michigan versus Ryan Day and Ohio State
Pertinent lyrics:
But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I got a list of names, and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Revenge. At the heart of “Look What You Made Me Do” is the concept that personal transformation can be fueled by revenge. The jagged and glitchy sound presents a nightmarish motif, the singer literally tells listeners how the “old Taylor” is dead.

Michigan football, under Harbaugh, went through a similar revenge-fueled transformation. In Harbaugh’s first five seasons in Ann Arbor, Michigan was 0-5 against Ohio State. The average margin of victory for Ohio State in those games was 19 points. The cumulative yearly humiliation from Ohio State forced Harbaugh to reconsider how he ran his program.

GO DEEPERFrom all-time low to championship contenders: How Michigan righted itself so fast

We all know now how those changes worked. Michigan rose from the dead and is on a two-game winning streak against Ohio State, with a per-game scoring margin of 18.5 points. The questions Harbaugh faced are now the ones Buckeyes coach Ryan Day faces. Will Day author his own version of “Look What You Made Me Do?” That will be one of the biggest questions going into this season.

Name of the song: “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”
College football comparison: College football fans to the BCS
Pertinent lyrics:
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never, ever, ever, ever getting back together

Explaining the BCS to a young college football fan is like explaining what Blockbuster was to the Netflix generation: So, a computer picked the title game matchup? Oh, it was six computers and some polls that figured out the matchup? Shouldn’t we call them formulas, not computers? What if three teams had undefeated records? Wait, no playoffs? Just a single game? And people were happy?

No one was happy! While we can still argue who should be in a four-team Playoff, or whether 12 teams in a Playoff are too many, those arguments are dramatically less intense compared to arguing with a computer. In 2024, as college football fans are getting ready for the debut of the 12-team Playoff format, they’ll be able to chant loudly: “BCS, we are never ever ever ever getting back together.”

Name of the song: “Illicit Affairs”
College football comparison: the non-UCLA/USC Pac-12 university presidents and ADs
Pertinent lyrics:
And that’s the thing about illicit affairs
And clandestine meetings and stolen stares
They show their truth one single time
But they lie and they lie and they lie

If there is any song in Swift’s discography that speaks to this moment in college football, it is “Illicit Affairs,” a song about infidelity and broken promises.

(Video) Taylor Swift - …Ready For It?

Now, I don’t want to accuse the leaders at the non-UCLA/USC universities of the Pac-12 of being unfaithful to their conference. I would never dream of such a thing! But there’s this sense that if the Big Ten or SEC jumped into the DM’s of Oregon or Washington, those schools would jump at the chance to find a new long-term partner.

The marriage of the remaining Pac-12 teams feels like one of convenience. Almost like a marriage pact in a bad rom-com, one where two friends say they’ll get married at the age of 40 if neither of them are married by then. I don’t know how strong the connection is between the rest of the conference, particularly without a shiny new TV contract to reassure the membership.

GO DEEPERWhat we're hearing on the Big 12/Pac-12 power struggle

Name of the song: “You Belong with Me”
College football comparison: ACC to Notre Dame
Pertinent lyrics:
If you could see that I’m the one who understands you
Been here all along, so why can’t you see?
You belong with me

Swift is the modern-day queen of the breakup song. She dives deep into the betrayal and failure of love. The wrongs that are inflicted upon partners during a parting of ways. “You Belong with Me,” though, is a song about the hope of a new relationship. It was written when it was conceivable that Swift was the underdog. The slightly awkward country girl competing for a boy whose attention is on the cheer captain.

And gosh the ACC wants Notre Dame bad. The ACC wants Notre Dame so bad that it wouldn’t be surprising to see conference commissioner Jim Phillips drawing little hearts surrounding “ND + ACC = 4eva” scribbled on every page of his notebook. Notre Dame is the prestige football brand that could partly solve the ACC’s issues regarding the widening gap in TV revenue between itself and the SEC and Big Ten.

But yet the ACC is stuck in the friendzone, like the central figure in Swift’s song. The Fighting Irish see the benefit in having some kind of a relationship with the ACC, competing in nearly every sport in the conference except football. Notre Dame just won’t commit fully. The Irish may have their eye on the cheer captain (the Big Ten). It leaves the ACC to dream about the day Notre Dame wakes up and finds what it is looking for has been there the whole time.

Name of the song: “All Too Well” (10-minute version)
College football comparison: Tennessee football fans and Lane Kiffin
Pertinent lyrics:
And maybe we got lost in translation
Maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece ’til you tore it all up
Running scared, I was there
I remember it all too well

Tennessee football fans thought they had found love. In 2008, Lane Kiffin seemed to be the perfect hire.

Like how Swift sings about the man at the center of “All Too Well,” Kiffin too had a way with words. The visor-wearing offensive genius charmed Volunteers fans, declaring at his introductory news conference that fans would be “singing Rocky Top all night long after we beat Florida next year.”

(Video) Taylor Swift - ‘tis the damn season (Official Lyric Video)

But Swift and Vols fans were left in the same place by the end of the relationship. Both ended suddenly, three months for Swift, and just one season for Tennessee as Kiffin bolted back to Hollywood and USC.

The interesting thing about this comparison is that Swift and Tennessee football are (seemingly) in a better place. The recently released 10-minute version of “All Too Well” takes on added significance. Tennessee fans, also, have been on their own journey since Kiffin left. A series of failed head coaches have brought them into a happy relationship with current head coach Josh Heupel. The program, its coach and the fan base are in a healthier place after knowing, all too well, the years of pain from getting themselves into a bad relationship with the wrong person.
